Joshua Returns to the UK for Friends' Burial Today

The former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has made his way back to the United Kingdom after a tragic automobile accident in Nigeria resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends and teammates, according to Sunday PUNCH.

Joshua sustained minor injuries in the incident that killed Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele on Monday, December 29. The 36-year-old boxer was discharged from the hospital on New Year’s Eve.

As reported by the UK-based outlet, the BBC, on Saturday, Joshua has returned to his homeland following the tragic event.

The BBC reported: 'Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has returned to the UK following a deadly car accident in Nigeria that resulted in the deaths of two of his close friends.'

Sky Sports reports that the funeral services for Ghami and Ayodele will be held at the London Central Mosque this Sunday.

The individual behind the vehicle involved in the accident, Adeniyi Mobolaju Kayode, aged 46, faces charges from Nigerian authorities for causing a fatality through reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle without proper licensing, according to confirmation from the Ogun State Police Command on Friday.

Kayode received permission to be released on a bond of N5 million and remains in custody until the requirements for his bail are fulfilled. The court proceeding has been postponed till January 20.

Ifeoluwa Adeniyi, the 19-year-old son of the driver, has spoken out in support of his father, claiming the incident resulted from a malfunctioning braking system and a vehicle that was unlawfully parked.

"Dad isn't a quick driver; he was obeying the speed limit when the brakes stopped working," Ifeoluwa said to the Daily Mail.

He claimed he was pressing the accelerator, yet nothing occurred. He has driven for Anthony for three years; he is an experienced driver. It isn't his responsibility; had the truck not been unlawfully parked, this incident would not have taken place.

The attorney for Kayode, Olalekan Abiodun, stated that Joshua was fortunate enough to survive the accident because of an unexpected switch in seating.

"I know the trip began in Lagos and at first Anthony was sitting in the front seat, but the driver requested he switch places," Abiodun said to Daily Mail.

He did this because Anthony is a large person, and he had trouble seeing the side mirror clearly, so he requested him to shift positions, and he ended up sitting behind the driver. As far as I know, Latif was initially in the front and later switched places with Anthony.

The fighter was traveling in a Lexus SUV which crashed into a parked truck on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway close to Makun. At the moment of the accident, Joshua was heading to see family members in Sagamu for New Year festivities.

The accident took place only 10 days following Joshua's win via stoppage against Jake Paul in Miami.

Gov. Dapo Abiodun from Ogun State and Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State thanked citizens for their prayers and assistance after the event. They additionally acknowledged President Bola Tinubu for his backing during this time.

The two state governments commiserated with the families of the deceased, describing the incident as painful and deeply unfortunate. They prayed that Almighty God would grant the souls of the departed eternal rest.

The police are continuing their inquiry into the events leading up to the deadly accident.
